There are anniversaries, and then there are moments that genuinely matter. On 24 October 2026, something special is happening at the Cutlers Arms in Rotherham — a full-scale celebration of one of the most important albums in the history of electronic music. Black Celebration, Depeche Mode's brooding 1986 masterpiece, turns 40, and The Devout are marking the occasion with a show that goes far beyond the typical tribute act experience.

This isn't a band running through a setlist with a strobe light and a fog machine. The Devout are dedicated Depeche Mode obsessives who also happen to be seasoned music professionals — producers, performers and historians of the band's catalogue with decades of deep knowledge behind them. They've studied the original 1986 Black Celebration tour performances with forensic attention, and what they're bringing to the Cutlers Arms stage reflects that. Expect original tour versions of the Black Celebration tracks as they were performed that year, wrapped in a full production video and lighting show built specifically for this anniversary event.

The evening runs to around two and a half hours — a proper immersion rather than a fleeting glimpse. Dark synthesisers, those glacial arpeggios, the weight of lyrics that felt like they were written about something just beyond reach. A Question of Lust, Stripped, But Not Tonight — the album came at a point where Depeche Mode were transcending pop and reaching for something more cinematic and emotionally raw. Seeing those songs performed live, with the production values they deserve, is a different experience to putting on the record alone in a dark room. It's communal, electric and — if the previous shows are anything to go by — intensely moving.

The Devout have earned extraordinary praise for exactly this kind of performance. The BBC have called them "the UK's best Depeche Mode Tribute", which is a remarkable endorsement in its own right. But perhaps more telling is this: Alan Wilder, Depeche Mode's own keyboard maestro and one of the architects of the band's classic sound, has said "I urge anyone to go and see The Devout perform." When someone who was actually in the room when these records were made tells you to go and see a tribute act, you take notice.

The Cutlers Arms in Rotherham makes for an intimate and atmospheric setting — the kind of venue where the sound wraps around you and there isn't a bad spot in the house. If you were there for Depeche Mode in the 80s, this will feel like a homecoming. If you discovered them later, this is your chance to understand why they changed everything. Either way, 24 October 2026 is a night worth showing up for.
